Sir Fred loses pension

Sir Fred Goodwin, the former Royal Bank of Scotland Group's chief executive, has had his pension entitlements overwhelmingly voted against by shareholders.

With nine votes to one, Sir Fred has been denied his 2008 remuneration package, making it the first time that such a vote has rejected a package being provided by a publicly-listed bank.

It is understood that Sir Fred has been considering accepting a reduction in his pension, which currently stands at £693,000, or donating a substantial part of it to a charity of his choice.

The flashpoint of the pension row happened when Sir Fred's home in Edinburgh was attacked by vandals, smashing windows at his abode and attacking his Mercedes which was parked outside.

One of the few comments Sir Fred made following the angry response to his contract was that he would not be responding to criticism, stating: "I don't mean to be rude but I'm not speaking to anyone. I am limited to what I can say contractually
