  Delegates from various pensioner action groups have been gathering for a three-day National Pensioners Convention (NPC) in Blackpool.

• In a speech to the National Pensioners' Convention Parliament, Michael Parkinson said there needed to be a shift in society's attitude towards the elderly. He questioned why people were afraid of growing older and called on younger generations not to "shove" those older than them into a corner. He also urged people to think about and accept responsibility for the way older people and their families were treated. He said: "We should not look at nursing staff, not at hospitals and so on, we should look at ourselves. Why are we so afraid of growing old? Why do we neglect older people as a society?"

  In general our older generation are treated shockingly, particularly by the Government, and much more needs to be done to look after and above all, respect, our senior citizens.
