Message from Peter Morris  President BAPA

The following Early Day Motion has been tabled by Sir Menzies Campbell:

"EDM 1851  SOCIAL SECURITY (S.I., 2006, No. 712)
That an humble Address be presented to Her Majesty, praying that the Social Security Benefits Up-rating Regulations 2006 (S.I., 2006, No.712), dated 9th March 2006, a copy of which was laid before this House on 16th March, be annulled."

This EDM seeks to ensure that those expats living in countries not covered by reciprocal social security arrangements are entitled to have their state pension annually uprated in the same way as those still living in the UK. There are currently almost 500,000 expat pensioners living in countries that are not covered by such agreements, who see this important principle as a matter of justice for those who paid many years of National Insurance contributions before emigrating. The Department for Work and Pensions has estimated that the cost of including these people in the annual uprating order would be just ?20m for 2005/06.

The National Pensioners Convention, on behalf of our many sister organisations in the countries affected by this issue, therefore urge you to sign EDM 1851 as a way of highlighting the importance of this issue and the need for the government to act on behalf of all UK pensioners, regardless of where they reside.

Yours sincerely
